The purpose of the stay there was to find a suitable room on rent for the fidayeens. Fahim was tasked to provide logistical support to the hit squad and do a recce of the targets. Finally, Fahim found Shantabai’s chawl on December 10. The investigators found maps of Mumbai’s roads and a hand-drawn map of the BSE from the room.

Once he moved into the chawl on Grant Road, he enrolled at a computer centre in front of the BSE. “The main purpose was to dedicate more time in the same area to do a proper recce of the BSE. This also helped him to escape attention as a new man in the area,” Lal said.

While he was registered as Shahil Paskar at the computer centre, his name was Samir Sheikh at Good Luck Driving School near J J Hospital in Mumbai, said Lal.

Fahim Ansari alias Abu Zarar had taken Shantabai’s room on a rent of Rs 3,000 a month for fidayeens (suicide squad members) who planned to attack the Bombay Stock Exchange, investigators have found.

Ansari was one of the eight people arrested by the UP police in connection with the attack on the CRPF camp in Rampur. The Anti-Terrorist Squad took him to Mumbai on Thursday evening for further investigations.

The police initially suspected Fahim to be a Pakistani national as he was carrying a Pakistani passport. Later they found that he was originally a resident of a chawl in Gopi Lal Nagar in Mumbai’s Goregaon and was the local contact for Lashkar e-Taiba.

“After his return from Pakistan, Fahim stayed at Sunlight Guest House, Grant Road, Mumbai from November 28 to December 10, 2007. He stayed under the name Shahil Paskar,” said Additional Director General of Police (STF) Brij Lal.
